
Oil Seal, also known as rotary shaft lip seal or radial shaft seal, is a sealing device used between the rotating shaft and the fixed parts in mechanical equipment. Its main function is to prevent lubricating oil (or grease) from leaking from bearings or transmission parts, and to prevent external dust, moisture and impurities from entering the equipment, thereby protecting mechanical parts and extending their service life.
Basic Structure of Oil Seal
Oil seals usually consist of the following key parts:
Sealing lip (Lip)
Made of elastic material (such as rubber), it is in close contact with the rotating shaft to form a dynamic seal. Some oil seals have spiral oil return lines to improve the sealing effect.
Metal Case
Usually made of steel or stainless steel, it provides structural support to ensure that the oil seal is firmly installed on the housing.
Spring (Garter Spring)
Located behind the sealing lip, it provides radial pressure to enhance the sealing effect and prevent leakage caused by shaft runout or wear.
Dustproof lip (Secondary Lip, optional)
Single lip only seals oil, double lip increases dustproof function (second lip blocks external impurities).

Keep bearings, gearboxes and other parts lubricated to reduce wear.
Pressure Adaptability
Generally suitable for low pressure environments (< 0.05MPa ), high pressure requires special design.
Low Friction
Reduces shaft wear and energy consumption, suitable for high-speed rotation (linear speed up to 20m/s).
Dustproof and Waterproof
Prevent external dust, mud, water, and chemicals from entering the device.
Temperature Range
Typically -40°C to +150°C (depending on the material, fluororubber can withstand higher temperatures).

Customizable Metal Skeleton Structure Type and Material
Single Lip Oil Seal (Single Lip)
Only one main sealing lip, mainly used for oil prevention.
FKM (fluoro rubber)
High temperature resistance (-20°C-320°C), chemical corrosion resistance. Used in harsh working conditions.
ACM (acrylic rubber)
High temperature resistance (-25°C -+150°C) and ozone resistance, resistant to synthetic oils (such as ester lubricants), but poor water resistance. Suitable for high-performance automotive and industrial seals.
PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene)
Extremely chemical resistance (resistant to almost all solvents and corrosive media). High temperature resistance (-100°C - +280°C), very low friction coefficient. Suitable for extreme working conditions.
VMQ (silicone rubber)
High and low temperature resistance (-70°C-220°C), but low mechanical strength. Ozone and UV resistance, but poor oil resistance (not recommended for mineral oil). Suitable for non-oil media such as water and coolant.
EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber)
resistant to water, steam and ozone, but poor oil resistance (not suitable for mineral oil). Temperature range: -50°C - +150°C. Suitable for non-oil media such as water and coolant.
PU (polyurethane rubber)
high wear resistance and high mechanical strength, but poor high temperature resistance (-30°C - +80°C). Suitable for cylinder seals and low-speed high-load oil seals.
Single Lip Oil Seal (Single Lip)
Only one main sealing lip, mainly used for oil prevention.
Double Lip Oil Seal (Double Lip)
Main sealing lip + dust lip, mainly used for oil and dust prevention.
PTFE Oil Seal
High temperature and corrosion resistance, suitable for harsh environments.
Cassette Seal (Combined Oil Seal
Integrated bearing and seal, easy to install.

Common metal skeleton structure types:
- Fully Encased: The metal skeleton completely encloses the rubber part (only the sealing lip is exposed). It has strong anti-deformation ability and is suitable for high pressure or high vibration environments.
- Semi-Encased: The metal skeleton only partially encloses the rubber (such as the outer diameter or inner diameter). It is light in weight, low in cost, and easy to install.
- All-Rubber: There is no metal skeleton and it is completely fixed by rubber elasticity. It is suitable for non-standard size or flexible installation requirements.

Common materials for metal skeletons
- Ordinary carbon steel (SPCC/SECC): low cost, easy to stamp and form, requires surface anti-rust treatment (such as galvanizing, phosphating).
- Stainless steel (SUS304/SUS316): strong corrosion resistance, no need for additional coating, suitable for humid and corrosive environments.
- Galvanized steel: better anti-rust performance than ordinary carbon steel, but may still rust after long-term use.
- Aluminum: lightweight, corrosion-resistant, but low strength.
